Victoria's Falls Festival is heading north. The people behind the massively successful Falls Festival in Victoria (and Tasmania) have launched a new Brisbane event to take advantage of the sunshine, the booming economy and the party people. Sunset Sounds is the name of the festival and it features headlining performances from The Hives, The Kooks, Santogold and a whole bunch of others.
The Hives, as you may be aware, have a love of sharp suits. That's kinda their shtick. Well, that and being a punk/garage band from Sweden. The group released their fourth studio LP in 2007, The Black and White Album, and after a run of tours have retreated to the studio in recent months. They'll be popping up over the summer for a string of shows to road test the new material.
The Kooks are currently up to the third single from their Konk album. The LP debuted at number one in the UK and it's basically doing massive business. Sway is the name of the new single and accompanying EP. Being one of the biggest Brit bands at the moment, it's probably the ideal time to get into them.
As for Santogold, she's one of the breakthrough artists of 2008. While she's been kicking around the music scene since the late '90s, her debut, self-titled album saw her take the MIA template and run with it, creating a sonic mash-up that's won over both the underground and mainstream. Plus, there are plenty of other highlights at Sunset Sounds, but that should give you a pretty good teaser. See you there.
